As Africa and its Diaspora commemorate 50 years of post-independence Pan-Africanism, this unique volume examines critical lessons of peacemaking, socio-economic justice, women’s rights, environmental protection, and nuclear disarmament from the 13 prominent individuals of African descent who have won the Nobel Peace Prize since 1950.

The book is centred around the first American president of African descent, Barack Obama, whose father was Kenyan and whose career was inspired by the civil rights and anti-apartheid struggles promoted by other key individuals such as Marin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Albert Luthuli. Key lessons for peacemaking are drawn from figures such as Ralph Bunche, Anwar Sadat, Kofi Annan, and F.W. De Klerk; as well as lessons for women’s rights, environmental protection, and nuclear disarmament from Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee, Wangari Maathai, and Mohamed El-Baradei.

Dr. Adekeye Adebajo has been Executive Director of the Centre for Conflict Resolution, Cape Town, South Africa, since 2003. He previously served as Director of the Africa Programme of the New York–based International Peace Institute, when he was also an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He served on United Nations missions in South Africa, Western Sahara, and Iraq. Dr. Adebajo is the author of four books on: Building Peace in West Africa; Liberia’s Civil War; The Curse of Berlin: Africa After the Cold War; and UN Peacekeeping in Africa. He is editor or co-editor of eight books, on managing global conflicts, the United Nations, the European Union, West African security, South Africa’s and Nigeria’s foreign policies in Africa and African Nobel peace laureates.

We are looking forward to an interesting debate!

Best regards
