In April 2012, Joyce Banda became Malawi’s first female president – and the only second female Head of State of an African country – following the death of Bingu wa Mutharika, who ruled the country since 2004. The challenges for President Banda are huge as seem the expectations of the Malawian people and donors. The late president left the country politically divided and in economic crisis, with fuel and forex shortages and controversies around press freedom and gay rights. The fall-out with most donors led to the freezing of direct aid. This seminar will deal with the current developments against the background of Malawi’s political economy and history.
Questions the seminar will deal with are how the transition was managed, what wa Mutharikas legacy is, if Banda will be able to deliver or if hopes and expectations are exaggerated as well as what role donors have played and can play.
